Chris Evans is still absolute crap at voiceovers. He’s just too loud. But LeBlanc was quite funny and Reid is more than skilled at being an interesting presenter.

Interestingly, I think the weakest link this week was Harris’s review of the F12tdf. First, he fell into the trap of suggesting that it’s “the last of the big V12s” several times, which old Top Gear and the general automotive media have been whining about for years and still hasn’t happened. He’s nonetheless a great presenter, but it was just the least interesting film of the show.

Ken Block was predictably great, and LeBlanc’s comments added some nice levity to his mesmerizing driving ability. And Rory is actually a very passable presenter, giving good commentary and not being too overwrought or irritating like Evans has an alarming propensity to be.

The Star in a Rallycross Car segment was pretty bad. I’m not a fan at all of the new 2-guest format, as it doesn’t give Evans enough time to actually talk about the presenters and anything beyond their first car before they have to do the lap. Clarkson’s interviews felt much more personal, and Evans doesn’t do enough to keep the comic momentum going, though his radio background means this is the part of the show where he’s visibly most comfortable. Compound that with the fact that the guests now are presumably told to shill for one another, something old Top Gear made a concerted effort to avoid, and it just felt forced and Kevin Hart’s voice was still almost annoying as Evans’s. We did get a new fastest time from Anthony Joshua, though.

Other than that, I thought it was the best episode yet. Still needs more Schmitz.

I loved how the original V12 Vantage was proclaimed to be the “last V12 GT car”. In 2009.

He said it was the last N/A Ferrari V12 which they themselves have said. Hybrids are the future.

Do you know how long that star in a car segment was? 18 MINUTES..
They spend a THIRD of the program on the part nobody liked even in the last format. And one of the things that ruins the segment even further (asides from Chris Evans not being able to commentate) is that the car is neither slow, nor fast enough to be exiting to watch.
A slow car being thrown around quickly is fun to watch, you hear the engine rev hard, the tires squeal and it looks on the edge. Here it looks like a car being driven.

That’s it.

The engine is not being revved high, the car doesn’t look like it being put to the limit, the water section and the jump are a gimmick that don’t require skill, just putting your right foot down. And the biggest mistake they made was the leaderboard.
Notice how when they got a new car on old new Top Gear, they had a segment to get like 8 people out and do a lap so the board had some times on it? Now it is completely meaningless. Yes, Kevin Hart, you got 3th fastest. Out of five...

This is an overarching problem with the show, There is no weight to it. No real feeling of challenge or consequence. It just is there for the sake of being there and somewhat like the old one.

Asides from that, I actually liked the Harris segment. Yeah ok, the sentimental v12 shit, but whatever. Reid was pretty good. The kid joke was quite clever. Those 2 segments felt like proper Top Gear segments.

Sabine over acted and they don’t need to make her do that as she is awesome without it.

Matt and Ken Block was ok. Matt is good at acting as he is an actor so the quips he delivers land well. The segment was a bit hollow and meh, but the shots were nice enough.

The worst part of the new Top Gear is Chris Evans. He sucks the personality and chemistry out of anybody near him. He is forced, unfunny and a giant twat on and off the show. Without him and if they let people develop some personalities of their own instead of forcing a gimmick on them, this could be an ok show. Not stellar, but something that might develop into something.

Hey now, Chris Harris’s review style and Top Gear’s camera crew is pure car pron.

I just watched it and couldn’t stop from watching it over.

Then they went back to the shouty man wearing clothes high school kids wear, and my car boner went away.

That episode wasn’t good for the new series. That episode was good for any series. It’s tempo and pacing was great, it had just the right amount of levity and humor mixed with actual facts and opinions, the cinematography was great (as always), and having Sabine, Rory, Harris, and LeBlanc all do films broke up the scripted monotony of the old show.

And subject to the shortest, and possibly prettiest review in Top Gear history.
